I did as much as I'm going to on my Season 4 Catra costume (from the She-Ra reboot.) as much as I remember as being notable about making it. And some photos. )

Ev range

Drove to the Cape with my EV and really tested it's range. After driving down it said I had 130 miles of pessimistic estimate milage. As I saw driving back, I watched the pessimistic estimate go down faster than 1 mile/mile. I got my tomtom out so I could see a real time milage left read out. It did look like I was going to make it with ~15 miles left. Then I got stuck in traffic and suddenly had closer to 30 miles left because of the slower speeds. I wasn't using heat or A/C, but I was using headlights and radio.

So I think lesson is, I can likely make it to harwich port and back under ideal cercumstances, but if I have to climate control or as the battery ages, I will have to find some way to charge. Hopefully as the years go by charging will get easier. The cottage didn't have a good place to trickle charge, but there was a park and ride that had some level 2 charging. The level 3s were all near boston.

It was really nice to see my sister and neices and their families. I even had fun in the ocean, which is rare.

I've had a few software issues with the bolt, but they were mostly in the infotainment system (mainly the SD or USB not working, but it's also crashed on me and rebooted or not listened to the buttons on the steering wheel that control the radio.) Today's was a lot more worrisome.

The steering wheel panel, which has the speedometer, cruise control, lane guidance, headlight status, battery charge, etc. went black while I was driving and then slowly came back, starting with the gear indictor in the lower corner and slowly adding things back on. It didn't show all the indicator like when you start the car, but it did give the same message it does about the lane guiance system (which was the last thing to come back.)

The car itself didn't change any. The headlights stayed on, the car didn't sputter or the steering get heavy, but it really doesn't instill a feeling of confidence in one's car if that happens.

We got our level 2 charger installed. The install went realtively well. They didn't quite put it where I wanted, but where it is fine. They put the wire out the side of the breaker box, which the box seems to be designed for and he turned the plug over when I asked him while he was bored waiting. The reason he was bored was they needed a special breaker and the nearest one was in Worceter, so they had to send one of their guys to drive the almost hour to worceter and back to get it.

The box hums a little when it's feeding the car and the cable gets a little warm, but I think, given the amount of power running through it, both are at an acceptable level.

It's really strange to have the car full charged over night after using level 1 for a month and a bit.

I installed the 3d printed cord holder that was very kindly printed for me. I'm not 100% sure I have it in the righ place, but things are working well enough for now. I'm going to put up one more wire clip just to make cord managmenet a little cleaner.

car update

We had the electrician look at the site where we want our 240V install. I am a little worried they won't be able to find the right spot to drill the garage wall, but I think it will work out. I think I have some basement rearranging to prepare, but they're not actually coming for the install until August 10th.

Really ran the car through it's paces this week and with the trickle charger, it had less than 60 miles of range left. So far, though, it's been performing well on range, which is nice after the c-max did disappoint with it's fuel milage. I've already put 800 miles on it.

I got some seat covers because leather seats are hot and sticky and it boggles my mind that people pay extra for them. I am still annoyed that we couldn't get a 1LT, but I am super happy that I got a bolt at all. I need to figure out if I can attach the straps for the seat covers with out them tangling in all the electric seat adjustments. Even without them strapped down, they have alread made wearing shorts during the summer so much better. I just hope they don't damage the OEM uplostery.

I exercised the van today and it was actually weird driving a gas car because I'd gotten use to the instant torque.

We have our car. Annoyingly "Cars all ready" didn't mean it was actually ready and we had to wait another 30+ minutes. I really wanted to like that dealer, but something about today just got my anxiety to spike through the roof. I was so impatient, I didn't let him do set up and put the car out of "demo mode" and it phoned onstar to set up and I just hung up on onstar because I don't want it.

Now the learning curve and setting everything up and all the little things, like getting new velcro for the EX pass.

The dealer phoned saying the car was in (yay) but that we couldn't pay for it until tomorrow because both finance guys were out and couldn't have it until Monday.

Our "instant offer" expires today, so we phoned the dealer we had planned to sell it and they said they could take it today, but not pay us, because the right people left early.

So we phoned the other dealer who said they would honor the deal. He "texted" his manager and I waiting in silence for a long time on the phone. They wouldn't honor the offer from the other dealer (which isn't what they said when I was in.) They offered $337 less.

So I was about to phone the first dealer to tell them we'd bring them the car, even if they couldn't pay (they offered to do that) when the second dealer phoned me on my cell phone while I was waiting for the operator to pick up, and said they would honor the first dealer's offer.

So we are schedule to go to the second dealer (Ira toyota of danvers) to sell the car at 4:30. Here's hoping no more bullshit.

EDIT: so we do all the paperwork to sell the c-max to ira and they tell us after everything is signed that they can't cut a check today. ARG!!! but the c-max is sold and hopefully we'll have a check Tuesday (via fexex, hopefully no extra fee for choosing that option.) I feel so lucky we aren't depending on that money for buying the new car.

Using my detective skills, I have figured out that our car has been produced. We now have a VIN and an approximate delivery date to the dealer of June 14th. The dealer gave us none of this information.

Time to get the scratches buffed out of the c-max. I already put out some feelers on some online car pricing. Huge breadth of offers. Cargurus $4150, carmax $6000, vrooom $6,852, carvana $10,379.

I'm hoping timing works out that I get one more trip out of the c-max and that will bring it about up to 90k miles in that car. It doesn't feel that long since I got it, and other than the early issues, it's been a pretty good car, though the gas mileage was a bit disappointing for a hybrid.

Also the way things work we'll have to use the trickle charger until we can get an electrician in, but since part of the deal of the bolt is they pay for a "standard" plug installation, we have to wait to take possession of the car before we can get a 240V plug in the garage.

My mom came over with her tiller and we made a driveway side garden in response to my neighbor taking out part of my lawn with his plow. This now means I need to plant things. I have the blackest of thumbs, so this likely wasn't a good idea, but hey, I'm committed now!

My neighbor (same one) gave me his concept 2 rower that he left outside (and used outside.) It is in remarkably good condition given it out in the elements, but a few of the parts (like the seat) must be replaced. Luckily concept 2 has very affordable parts. The one part I'm trying to decide on is the front wheels. The bolt sheered off one of the wheels and I'll have to drill it out. They don't even sell replacement axles. I can get a whole new front foot for $25, but I already have $47 of parts, and I'm not sure how much I should put into this "free" rower. It is the "standard" but the electronic box likely isn't working, so it's not as useful without that ($200 to replace that which is definitely over the budget.) I might feel better if I could sell the other two rowers that I bought for my home gym for anything close to what I paid for them, which seems unlikely. The resell value of exercise equipment is miserable.

We got blood work on Kaylee. The numbers are slightly improved, but she still won't eat the prescription food, so it looks like giving her fluids is just part of our lives now. We're going to try again to do it at home, because I think that will be better for her in the long run, but I'm not that hopeful. As much as she's a sweet cat, she doesn't not usually put two and two together and figure out that maybe what we're doing makes her feel better a few hours later and that if we do it, she doesn't have to go to the vet to have it done. At least the vet is super close.

Still no movement on the BOLT, but that's to be expected. I have been wondering if I should still be looking for a 1LT since even if I lost the deposit, it would be much much cheaper in the long term, since a more costly car also means more excise tax and sales tax.

I did my first roll in hoop. It was scary enough, I don't have a good memory of it.

It's coming up my 1 year anniversary in cyr and I still can't waltz. I'm so jealous of the videos of people learning to waltz in 1 week.
forgotten_aria: (Default)
A friend let me drive the Bolt EV and it was a decent car. I'm not a fan of the idiotic brake placement trying to comply to the rule of "brake lights can't be on a movable panel," but that's about the only draw back and because of all the tax credits, it's 19k less than a LEAF with the same range (the next alternative.)

So I decided to try to order one. Luckily I learned enough about "allocations" to understand some of the dealers responses.

Apparently GM dealers get sent a list of cars they are allowed to order on Thursday (it's unclear if it's ever Thursday, or every second Thursday.) This list is different for every dealers. So there are some that might get 3 Bolt allocations, and some that might get 0 for months. Right now the lowest trim, the 1LT, is also on "constraint," meaning the factory isn't taking orders for them even if the the dealer has a bolt allocation.

Production of the bolt shuts down in November and there is a large back log of orders, so there is a chance that if I order now, I might not even get a car. The chances of getting a 1lt are unknown.

The dealers have no idea what allocations they will get in the future and there is not a lot of information on how the system works. Right now I've contacted a few dealers and have the following responses (none of the dealers bothered to try to explain allocations or constraint.)

"I was just informed by my management team that at this time we do not have a Bolt allocation."
"We have stopped taking any orders because we have reached our allocation limit."
"The 1 LT is on constraint!"

One of the dealers who clearly didn't realize how in demand the Bolt was went from "sure we can order you one at MSRP" to "we have no allocations and it's a $3000 mark up over MSRP."

So we have to decide if we want to try to order a 2LT, or find someone willing to try to order a 1LT and take our chances or something else.

Luckily this isn't dire. The plan was to replace the c-max with an EV before the battery warranty ran out. But if nothing else we can keep the c-max and spend the $6-8k to have the battery replaced plus whatever other repairs it needs.

EDIT: I've already told two dealers that 6-8 months > November. E.i. They were more than happy to place and order that likely would never be filled.

(Some of these dates might not be perfect. Some of these models were only discontinued in North America)

My first car was a 2000 Saturn SW2, It stopped being made in 2001, Saturn folded in 2009.
I sold it because my knee couldn't handle the clutch any more.
My second car was a 2008 Mazda5. It was discontinued in 2015. (Hey, not so bad.)
I sold it because it was starting to have high maintenance charges and I wanted a hybrid.
My third car is a 2015 c-max, the c-max was discontinued in 2019.
I'm currently looking to replace it because I don't want to face a battery replacement and would like an EV.
My cargo car (because G stopped needing a commuting car) is a 2020 Transit Connect. The gas connect is being discontinued this year.

The EVs I am considering have already announced they are being discontinued. (The bolt this year, the leaf next year or the year after.)

Not sure what this says about me and cars.

fluids

We took Kaylee to the vet for fluids a few times. They've been not charging us for the visits. Yesterday and today we tried with a smaller needle (a 20, vs and 18) at home. The smaller needle did seem to hurt her less, but it makes the whole process slower. We couldn't finish the treatment because she was able to struggle enough to pull the needle out. She has three more treatments before her follow up blood work, so we'll likely take her to the vet, which will likely be worse for her then if she could stay calm and let us finish the treatment, but we can't communicate that to her.

She's at least not holding a grudge about this whole thing and her weight is stable. All in all, not so bad.

I always find coming back to my journal a very useful thing, so this post is going to be BORING, but I want to make an attempt to post form time to time.

Kaylee: We continue to give her subcutaneous fluids. It does seem to improve her appetite and she doesn't hold a grudge, but she also doesn't like being still that long. I stabbed myself trying to make sure the needle was on right. At least it was a sterile needle.

Cars: I've decided I don't want to deal with a ~6-8k battery replacement cost on the c-max, so I plan to replace it before the warranty is up in 2025. I really want to get an EV, but there are very few small affordable options. I'm starting this early because I know that car companies are loving this "futuristic" look and also they they're making EVs more costly in general. There was a great car that stopped being made in 2021, for example. One of our front runners will get an "update" in 2024 that I really hate, so I have to eliminate that before they stop being available for order (since dealers seem to not carry the lowest level trim.)

Every car I have ever bought stopped being made a year or two later. I HATE that the US is so obsessed with SUVs. In fact one of the front runners is labeled an SUV for, as far as I can tell, no reason at all. There is nothing SUV-ish about it. What I'm learning is how I use a car seems to just be different, even from my friends. I'm finding it very hard to find out what features I depend on are actually available because most reviewers just don't care about those things. They care about "fun" and "hard plastics."

Sometimes I love being weird and an outlier. Sometimes I hate it. This is one of those times.

I'm glad I'm starting early, but it's requiring a LOT of research to find out the things I need to know.

I've been still hoping we could get a kitten, despite Kaylee's health condition, so we brought out the RFID cat feeder. She had no problem eating out of it when it was off, but once we put it in learning mode, she became afraid of it. A life time of being yelled at for eating other cat's food and just being naturally skittish means I don't think she's going to get over it. Since it's more important she eats, I pulled her food out of it and moved it away, to make sure she's not scared. I put some treats it in and kept it in learning mode in hopes she might get used to it, but it's a slim hope.

She doesn't seem to be lonely as a single cat, but given how she plays at night, I think a kitten might have been some welcome stimulation for her.

Hard to know for sure, and it is moot if we can't make sure we can feed her the special diet.

"The Whale" is not ok. Yes, I haven't actually watched it, but there are enough details about it that don't require watching it, I can make that statement. I can understand a fat suit when a character has to make a change quickly, like old age make up. But a fat suit for a whole movie isn't ok. Apparently (sadly I can't find the source) Fraiser said it was “self serving” for fat people to want to play fat characters. The movie is the same old fatphobic, ablist crap that is in most media. Here's someone who actually saw it:

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/mar/10/lindy-west-on-the-whale?fbclid=IwAR33fLJSxZ5tfW2ZDo2PH2ZoWrXWn3_SOHFxejovH5NSWiNVsed2rVUt-b8

From the article "people respond positively to The Whale because it confirms their biases about what fat people are like (gross, sad) and why fat people are fat (trauma, munchies) and allows them to feel benevolent yet superior."

Finished season 1 of Our Flag Means Death and quite enjoyed it even if there was very little gender diversity and I confused a few of the characters because the cast was so large. I had no clue Taika could do more than the "Korg" note. It was both sweet and violent.

I am so mad at myself. I anguish over how bad I am at physical things, but I have a pretty neat body. Sure it can't do uncommon things or even a lot of common things, but it can do a lot. So why do I keep lamenting about what it cannot do? Why can enjoy just trying, being, using it. Why do I have to be GOOD at something for it to be worth doing?

I did a squat workout, went to TKD, and practiced cyr, including my first attempt at strengthening for coin. I mean, come on, me!

I'm almost healed 100%, but not quite. I requested my imaging, but I haven't received it yet. I've tried to follow some leads for a PCP, but haven't found anyone yet. Still no clue on what actually happened. I have a few guesses, but they're just that, guesses.

Nate (my cat) has good days and bad days. Today was a bad day and he was having convulsions (we actually think the vet is wrong and they really are seizures) about one ever 10 minutes or so. We don't know how much discomfort he's in, so it's really hard to try to judge his quality of life. He seems happy enough when they aren't happening and he can actually sleep.
