Bolt's USB/SD problem

Mostly just trying to keep notes for myself.
I have a USB drive with all my music on it. I've used it in the old car for years. Other than a semi-random announcement "Because of the number of files on your media device some speech commands are not available on this device,” it worked well for the time I used that car.
The new car, it worked fine at the start, but then the car stopped seeing the USB drive intermittently. So I tried the SD slot. This worked the first time, but then it wouldn't see the card no matter what I tried. So I tried a different SD card, and it can see the new card. My laptop can see the old card, so it isn't that the car failed.
I even tried new, old, new and it was at least consistent with only seeing the new card. Only one song was loaded on to the new card, so I'm loading more music on to it (less, because it's a smaller card) and I will continue to see if the car can see it.
It's seeing the USB again for now too. The car is happy to have both of them in, so maybe I can take the shotgun approach and use whatever the car happens to be happy with today.
I will continue to try to get more data and try to figure out a pattern/workaround/debug what's actually going on.
Online isn't much help because I'm kind of a dinosaur for caring about this feature and a lot of people think the SD slot can't be used for music and that it's a vestigial remnant of when maps were loaded into the nav system that way, but clearly it can play music, since I've done it.
