cutting wood on a cricut maker
May. 26th, 2019 09:16 pmI have been eyeing one of those craft cutting machines for decades and finally decided to take the plunge. I've had it for a few months, but finally got around to cutting basswood with it. first, 1/16" is not very thick at all. I knew this conceptionally, but in practice it's even worse. The machine didn't cut all the way through (more on that) and while I was finishing the cut, I broke several of the pieces.
You need a special machine and special blade and then 14 passes to cut basswood. What I didn't know is after it's done you can ask it for another pass if the cut is not complete. However, even after I knew this, it was hard to figure out since it was the wood itself that would prevent a letter from being cut. So one letter might be fine, while another has a very thick hard spot of wood that will take many more passes.
I am a little disappointed, but I can't say I am all that surprised.
The good news is they are working to make their software work offline, which was one of my largest objections. I'm hoping to find good uses when I make my Halloween costume and I have some t-shirts I want to cut vinyl if I can bring myself to spend the money on the heat transfer vinyl.
