200 hours in baldur's gate 3
Feb. 17th, 2024 11:43 pmI've past 200 hours in baldur's gate 3 and i'm still really enjoying it. It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a video game this much.
I have two group runs, which I hope the people I'm playing with are enjoying it too. I really like seeing how other people approach the game and I'm seeing lots of things I've not seen before too.
I'm almost done my solo run (I think.) The save file says about 90 hours, but that doesn't include the times when I had to go back and redo some things. I've also been watching some of the other alternate decisions. I also missed a HUGE chunk of the game not understanding how act 2 works. I also completely failed to romance anyone.
I think I laugh out loud at least every time I play. I've been enjoying watching vods of the voice actors play and their love for the game. The narrator VA developed a new voice for her play through character and has another person RPing very hard with her as she streams. So I've also put even more hours into watching other people play.
Despite all the time, I'm not very good at the game. I'm not good at gearing/party decisions and I'm sloppy when it comes to battle.
I'm looking forward to my next solo run, which will be a dark urge run, though I'll have to come to terms with how not helping people kind of cuts down on the side questing. I'm also not sure if I want a goblin party or not and just how durge-y I want to be.
It is absolutely bonkers to me how much there is in this game. Astarion's voice actor say there is 2 hours of content he's pretty sure no one will ever find. I can't imagine the sheer volume of voice acting in the game. There is also so many ways to can play the classes, especially with multiclassing. There is a series on youtube where the guy takes people from popculture, like Thor, Arya Stark, or Subzero, and suggests a class/race build to mimic those heroes. The environments are also gorgeous and have lovely variety of topology and object models. They also got me to read the books. I only barely read quest text normally, but there's enough going on and they do a good job of having less than a page or two of text with something interesting in it. I almost never read in a game.
It is by no means a perfect game. I still mis-click things or shoot the floor, or fight with the camera to see inside a room, but this is something I've not witnessed before in scope and richness.
I'm hoping once I'm done my first run through I'll put a little less time into playing. It's been fun any all, but there are some projects waiting for me.
EDIT: I also wanted to mention I think it's awesome that the characters have different relationship types, such as being fiercely monogamous and careful with physical intimacy and those who are totally up for casual physicality, including one who basically says "I'm in to you, but I know you're seeing this other person. I'd be happy to have a fling, but only if you make sure it's ok with your SO." And sometimes it's not actually easy to understand where a character lies on what they really need from a relationship. Though it's also annoying that you can sometimes piss off someone are romancing by having an innocent interaction with another person. I do wonder if it was actually indented though as another variation on how people can be.
EDIT2: Also that the solo experience is the best from a plot point of view. Even in my duo game with G, the way the characters interact with the "leader" and the other person is a odd. In our 4 person game there will be plots we just can't do at all without potentially buggy mods, so in a way it feels like a slightly different game.
EDIT3: I think I'm going to play dice durge, which is a dark urge run, but any dialog that has a durge option, roll a dice to see what option you actually pick. I'm hoping this will stop me from picking a heroic option just because I want more side questing.
