The SES light hates me.

So I might be here for Christmas after all. It all depends on if I can get a car appointment and the car fixed by the end of Monday.

The Service Engine Soon light came on tonight. No other obvious signs of what might be wrong.

I'll let you know more when I know more.

It just does that based on how many miles you've driven since they last reset it, usually. Often not a big deal at all.

Except my last service was only a few months ago... I think... I'm sure that it has had it's 15k anyway, and it's only at 15500. I will be mighty annoyed if it is just that they forgot to reset the light.

There is a noise, though since I've not listened much to my car with it's hood up, I don't know for sure. It sounds like there is a vacuum cleaner in my engine.

Did you check the manual for your car?

"Service Engine Soon" on modern cars is distinct from "Check Engine". SES is for emission system problems as opposed to major issues. Check your manual, but I know mine says it's not urgent to get it looked at immediately. Common problems include gas cap not on correctly or a bad tank of gas, esp if wherever you are has oxygenated gas for winter.

Thank you for this suggestion. My manual says that it is serious and that I should take it in for service, but it also said "Did you drive through a puddle? The SES light will come on if the electrics are wet." I didn't drive trhough a puddle, but it was fairly cold (cold enough to cold soak the car) and then very wet and rainy, so this might explain it. Anyway, I just started the car one more time, and the SES light is gone. So if it remains gone in teh morning, I'm driving out.
