On a suggestion I put it on center preference and went for a walk. The lens worked great outside. no focus problems at all. And I kind of love it. I bought it home and it didn't perform as well as it had outside nor as badly as it did when I wrote the first post, so I think it's some combination of the focus not working well in low light and it not playing well with certain settings on my camera. I think I have to continue to test and consider.

Here's the complete gallery of my test walk. The blurriness at the end is the long shutter and motion blur. There's some bad pictures in it because I was mostly trying to test the lens's performanc more than anything else.

Is that a telephoto lens in your camera, or are you just happy to see me?

Have you checked how to trigger the auto focus?

Every camera I have had with auto focus has been very prone to picking a random object near the center and deciding "this raindrop is what I am supposed to focus on".

In general auto focus only works when something is really centered so artistic photos can be a pain to take.

The photo with your cat picked the blinds or the window as center. My camera requires me to center on something at the right distance, depress the button until it focuses then move the camera to take the picture I wanted while keeping the button pressed so it will not refocus. But your camera might have a different trick for setting focus point.

My personal bane is taking pictures of groups of people as I will have them centered but the camera will inevitably focus a tree way behind the people because there is a sliver of space between them and this has bitten me several times.

My camera shows me exactly where the auto-focus point is because you can change it to be off center, just for those reasons. I often do change it too.
