Really, it depends whose car. I don't expect ever to spend over $30,000 on a car, but I know some people pay double that.

I don't think anything at all because that's too damned vague. It's almost as useless as "the price of a college education" which could mean anything from community college through a PhD at a private university. OK, it probably means a BS, but there's still the range of resident tuition at a state school through ivy league.

When I say/hear that something costs the price of a "foo", I figure since it's a comparison I will assume the price of a new car and not a decked-out luxury car or a beater, though of course you can buy cars anywhere in that range of prices.

My bucket is probably centered around $20K too, and it is a useful metric kind of like "the price of a refrigerator" or "the price of a house" are. is it bigger than a breadbox? does it cost as much as a car?

I tend to think about who is saying it.

I know a few people who could easily say 'the price of a car' and mean 60k
And a few who wouldn't dream that a car could ever cost that.

Mind you, *I* wouldn't pay that much for a car, unless it were the only way to get a reliable efficient hybrid. But I have the impression that most new cars are in that range.
