There was a surprise 2x4 that I think was holding up the shower head. I'd already made the hole, so it was easier to notch the shelf than to shorten the hole.

And now you can get in there to find the source of the leak, replace the stupid drain switch, and the like, just by taking out screws.
Yay win.
Now to complete my project of the same kind. An alcove from the Rubble Room into the space between tubs.
