gold stars

We learn, in our youth, that we do things to get things, grades, stars, etc. In life, we do things for money, sometimes, but the money we get doesn't actually corrilate one for one with what we're doing or how well we're doing it. Sometimes we also do things for fun, not for money.

I think life needs more gold stars. It should be social acceptable for giving a friend a gold star for being there when you need them, or when someone says something particularly point, or when someone adds a smile to your day.

It wouldn't work, so maybe we need to change how our schools work.

It is socially acceptable. But most subcultures do more in the way of active, casual praise than is the norm in our MIT one. (I see a lot of people giving each other gold stars on LJ, for example. Or, [livejournal.com profile] chenoameg sent me a thank-you note for organizing group theater subscriptions, which has been "my job" for *years*.)

In a work context it almost means more to me to be told that the thing I've done is useful to somebody than to get paid for showing up at the same place every day. I still get warm fuzzies every time I see in a press release that our product does XML Schema validation because that was what I spent the first six months of this job doing.

This is why I started giving out gold stars on my lj. Thanks for reminding me to do that more. :)

I think it was Gandhi who said, "Be the change you want to see in the world." Of course, I'm not so sure how this reconciles with your plans to be more like Bad Horse.

Yeah. I do try to remember to say thank you to people when I appreciate something. I rarely go further, like sending cards, even though I've appreciated when other people have done the same.
