I installed the replacement motherboard and it seems like it's fixed the problem. I need to burn in the computer a bit more before I completely rejoice, but so far, yay!

I learned how to install a processor and it's paste today, which is something I was super afraid to do and technically it was on their dime, so maybe all the pain was worth something after all.

I have a shuttle xpc (ss51g I think is the exact model number), and it's the second revision of the machine -- the power supply for the first machine of this type I had exploded -- releasing magic smoke and all.

I had hoped that the memory and disk was okay -- it was. I was worried that there wouldn't be enough thermal paste on the processor by the time that I moved it into its new home, but what little remained appeared to be fine.

I'm reluctant to ask since you already have it all together, but one thing I learned the hard way was that the procedure for applying thermal paste varies from processor to processor. For instance, Intel's Core Duo's and Quad Core's call for a horizontal line between the cores (e.g. when the tower is sitting upright, the "line" of paste is pointing up and down), whereas I believe AMD processors want a dollop in the middle about the size of an uncooked grain of rice...

I only bring it up because I cooked a processor and I think applying the paste the wrong was was a significant causal factor.

The intel help video we saw called for a intel provided sheet, rather than gel, so we spread the gel as evenly and thinly as possible across the fan/heatsink contact. It seemed to be what had been there when we took the old stuff off.

It's a duo, but we didn't find any instructions on that. I'm a little mad at cyberpower for 1) not giving me more guidance 2) not providing more gel.

Hopefully it will all be happy, but yes, I was super worried about frying it.
