The high, light piano music played, backed by soft strings. I guess
that meant I was supposed to feel hope and relief from the tension
that had built for the past 36.5 minutes. I didn't. I looked down and
was startled to notice my letterboxing. I shouldn't be able to see
that. Something was horribly wrong. I'd slipped off my fictional
rails. My life would no longer resolve.

I turned in fear away from my world and stared out the screen I'd
never noticed before. My eyes widened as I saw the lifted remote
through the lattice of closing credits.

I like this one.

You've stopped titling them?

Very nice.

What's shadowboxing?

I thought it was a common term. What do you call the black bands around the image to make a wide image fit on a square screen?

I call it letterboxing... not sure why, now, though.

Actually, I think that's the more common term.

I think of "shadowboxing" as pretending to box, with no actual opponent. But it might also have a technical useage.

I was getting excited that I was going to get to explain what shadowboxing was but I kept scrolling and lo, dissappointment lurked.

Whoever you are, we are not friends anymore. I'm sorry.

Yeah, shadowboxing is what desireearmfeldt said and letterboxing is the widescreen bands. I figured it out from context, though.

Shadowboxing can also be putting something 3D in a thick frame or "shadow box"

But yes it seems my brain made up a new definition. I've edited the story to letterboxing.
