Dear lj,

What's your favorite piece of music featuring a mandolin?

Nickel Creek is great!

I'm not good at identifying instruments
so I'm not sure which other songs I like
have mandolins, but I suspect lots do.

Wow. Mandolin is the core instrument of bluegrass, one of my favorite genres of music. Also thanks to David Grisman, it's one of the most featured instruments in new-acoustic postbluegrassey things. I can't possibly pick one favorite. Though I can recommend David Grisman :)

I'm surprised no one's mentioned anything off REM's Out of Time album. When I went through my (relatively brief) mandolin phase, the first thing I did was teach myself to play the ending bit from "Losing My Religion".

There are also some good mandolin songs on the Cold Mountain soundtrack.
