I found the other way too condescending to about 50 different kinds of geeks. He's got miniatures, his mom calls him all the time, he has a total lack of awareness that he really can't predict an alien system, he completely fails to notice his lab partner (who is officially uglier than Sam because she wears glasses). Just, ew!
Sure, this one was the SF show's obligatory "caught in a video game" scenario. They put it off for 7 seasons (star trek and farscape also have them, at least), and mixed in a little _Window of Opportunity_. Could've been much worse. Go them.
