I seem to have become allergic to underarm deoderant. I was already allergic to anti-perperant. I've tried the stuff that I've been using for ages, and tom's natural stuff. And yes, I really do need it.

I use the spray form of the weird crystal thingies and it works like a charm. I am allerigic to all other deoderants, even the Tom's one, and if I shave I can only use water, not even soap or shaving cream.

[livejournal.com profile] onetwolittleb, they sell the spray and the crystals at Wild Oats in Medford.

I think Trader Joe's has weird crystal things too.

It turns out that shaws has the crystal stuff. I'd like to know more about how it works though. the ingredients say "mineral salts" which isn't terribly convincing that it's doing much more than plecebo.

I believe that it's a deoderant, not an anti-perspirant. My recollection is that the bacteria that cause much of the odor can't live in that much salt. But it's a foggy recollection.

(re: hair, funny I always assumed that my underarms would be more sensitive to rashes and the like if I shaved the hair)

do you shave there? I found that when I shaved my underarms any deodorant would cause an evil rash for about 2 days. When I stopped shaving the evil rash stopped happening. Shaving is evil.

Not usually and not recently.

I've been actually wonderinf if the problem is the hair is too long.

I share more than half your genes and I, too, have had reactions to certain products for the pit, so my chemistry is probably a lot like yours.
Shaving is evil, but hair too long is not an issue. Mine has been long enough to braid, and I went without problems, but after a shave, almost anything will cause a rash or that nasty golf ball sized lump.
So I recommend you keep your mice and try another product.

Are you having a problem with Byly, for instance? I have a supply large enough to allow for sharing.
I can use the Avon roll-ons Sweet Honesty, and Night Magic, even though they have antiperspirant ingredients.

Your last choice is to use a high quality deodorant soap (although they all have some kind of scent--ew) and shower twice a day, and leave the pits un-fooled-around-with.

My latest problem is that I seem to be reacting to laurel, so I need to be really quick and really thorough getting shampoo off me, and super careful where my face goes when I sleep. My sheets (washed in Tide Free and double rinsed) are enough to make my lips swell if I sleep face down.
What does someone do if they are allergic to laurel? They would be allergic to just about every cleaning product in our environment.
A side note: Think about how much of it we use: laundry, dishes, shower products, toothpaste, even in industrial products for treating oil spills in the environment. Where is all this laurel coming from? We never hear about a laurel shortage, or the Great Laurel blight.

Oddly, I've shaved my underarms for years and years and never gotten a noticeable rash. The only time it bothers me at all is when I forget and let the hairs grow too long. Body hair is evil. :)

well, I do find hairs at any middling length to be somewhat irritating, but the problem with deodorant only happens in the first couple of days, when there are presumably lots of tiny microabrasions from shaving (even if I am really careful and use a nice soft sensitive-skin gel). Also, my skin sticks to itself if there is no hair there. But if I let the hair grow fully out then the ends of it soften up and the irritation goes away.

I've been using the crystal stuff for quite a while now, and I like it a lot. Seems to deal with the odor issue just fine, and doesn't have the yucky-powder effect that many standard antiperspirants have.
