Mostly just documenting this.
Yesterday I noticed some matted fur on Kaylee's ankle (where our ankle is at least.) I cleaned the wound and then on the way home from lunch got some "hydro gel" wound treatment. Shortly after applying the spray, the wound started oozing watery pus. With it oozing, I decided it might resolve itself over night. This morning, however, it had resealed. She was lucid and had no sign of fever, so we monitored her for the day, but by the evening it was looking filled, so I decided to take her to the emergency vet. The one I had been to before wasn't taking non-critical issues, so I waited a bit. They still weren't so I went to the sister hospital in Lawrence, Bulger.
They saw me super promptly, gave her some antibiotics and drained the abscess with a needle. They seemed a little annoyed that I had diagnosed it as an abscess, but really, I don't think that was much of a leap.
They charged $285 for diagnostics and $100 for the shot and some minimal amount for the draining. They warned me about the diagnostic charge on the phone, so it wasn't a surprise.
A bit costly, but other than that, very pleased with the experience.
EDIT: she was shivering a bit before bed, but seems better this morning. Might have been a stress reaction or a mild reaction to the antibiotics. I also read the after report, and there was a little too much mention about her muscle wasting from her kidney disease. I told them she had been diagnosed and treated for her kidney disease.
