One of the very small privileges that I get as a white woman, is almost never having my receipt checked at stores that do that (no so much at warehouse stores, but other stores.) Would it do any good to insist on them checking it? Would that right any wrong? Would that make them aware they were being biased and unfair or would it just annoy the unfortunate worker? Are they making the judgement, or have they been told by management who to check?

No specific advice, but Costco is very good about this -- they check every receipt at the exit. Not that I've been shopping outside the house since March...

it would absolutely annoy the worker and possibly get them in trouble depending on what they are being held to (and remember, they are on camera).

they have absolutely 100% been told by management who to check and not to check, most retail outlets have "guidelines" on when and who to check receipts for and while sometimes the language is veiled it's always meant to target those who are poor, Black, or otherwise seen as "people who steal".

I think better actions are to ask ourselves, why do receipts need to be checked at all, and can we petition the store or company to cease that policy.
