What is it about buying checks?

I recently tried to by checks. The company that the bank ordered checks from (deluxe.com) required my account information before even giving me a quote and then sprung shipping on my that was more than the price of the checks. Then walmartchecks.com sprung a $3 "processing fee" on me just before check out.

Bah.

Seriously. With more online banking, fewer checks get used, so the overhead goes up to compensate. It's frustrating. Printing one's own checks should be doable ... if one doesn't care about microprint and other nominal security features. :-/

If it were just higher prices, I wouldn't be griping, but the games of sneaking in a higher price always get me annoyed.
