When an edge is brighter than the background usually because it is being hit by the light source, so you have to shade in the background and then erase or keep white the foreground object.
For instance, here's the original photo of the dog:
See how the edge of his back is white because the light is reflecting off his fur?

I like the circuit-board eye; the edge between the pencil and the marker may be what's looking not quite right? A fine black marker line at the edge of the eyelid (maybe not even all of it) might help with the boundary issue?
The gull also caught my eye, and the shading there is nifty.
