How do people wear underwires? I've always found them uncomfortable and decided, after 20 years, to try them again and they're just as uncomfortable as I remember them. Am I missing a trick, because it's so hard to buy bras that DON'T have underwires. So clearly most people must tolerate them.

My trick was to go to the nice people at Nordstrom who were so good about listening to me and found bras that i still wear now. I never wore underwires before those.

The thing is that if an underwire doesn't fit perfectly its horrible. I'm still not sure why an underwire is better than an nonunderwire but like you say, you can't find other kinds any more.

This is the key thing. And the other key thing is that boobs are weird and bodies are ALL kinds of different, so it's not just about finding the right size, but also the right cut, the right material, etc. I've tried on probably over a hundred different bras in the past few years in my search for what works for me, and I've mostly figured out what it is, but still have trouble finding great bras.

It's all I have worn for years, anything else seems wrong or useless.

The key: Get a good and proper fitting - and not one at victoria's secret (they offer limited sizes and will fit you into something they have available usually)

I suggest going to intimacy at copley square (or some other place that has an amazingly wide selection of bra sizing), yes their bras are ridiculously expensive, but you don't have to buy them - you can get fitted there - and then go order online for much much cheaper prices.

Ditto on the fit and comfort issue. If you wear one that is too narrow, it pokes. If you wear one that is too wide, it pokes in different places. There's a great measuring guide on reddit.com/r/abrathatfits and many small non-chain lingerie stores use the same thing. Nordstrom's is hit or miss on their accuracy; some still measure over the clothing or add numbers to your band size.

I really don't get bras at all in any form. Anything pressing against that spot where my boobs connect to my ribcage on the bottom makes me uncomfortable after about an hour or two. And a "well fitting" bra does absolutely nothing to help this since ALL bras contact there.

I wish I could go bra free, but if I'm doing something like jumping jacks, the little bit of discomfort from the band is far out weighed by the pain of my boobs trying to rip themselves off my chest.

Oh, yeah, for high-impact sports I do wear a sportsbra, but that generally fits within the 1-2 hour range. I also wear less constrictive ones at other times for other reasons, but that doesn't mean I ever think they're comfortable. I just suffer.

it seems to REALLY depend on the size and shape of your breasts. people are different!

i find underwear bras very comfortable, but i totally believe the people who find them acutely uncomfortable. breasts are really complicated objects with many variables -- it's amazing any bras ever fit anyone without a lot of customization.

the trick is: different brands and styles fit differently. if you care (which i don't imply that you should), here are some resources:
