I've been having a blast learning light spinning (I don't want to call it poi, because I think that's disrespectful to the Maori tradition.)

I found out the LED spinners I got were too light (only 25g) so I went to the dollar store and got some light wands and some super balls, which I turned into more things to spin. I also got some lacrosse balls.

I've been using the stripped ones mainly because they have a night weight and only hurt a little when they it me. Youtube lessons have been very helpful. I feel like I'm already able to do a lot, though I'm also sure I look horrible doing it. I'm looking forward to getting smooth. It's still super fun to take long exposures with what I can do.

EDIT: found this article about using the term "poi." http://www.homeofpoi.com/lessons_all/teach/Is-our-modern-use-of-Poi-offensive-to-the-Maori-people-of-New-Zealand-34_293_1945

Those are 2" exposures in the dark with a flash to capture me.

I hope to record a routine on video soon, however.

Oooo, pretty pictures!

Alex does poi! And fire spins. He even did it at our wedding (poi with glow sticks, not the fire bit).

Interesting article about the word "poi". Just from what they wrote, I found it a little odd that they decided, yes, the Maori collectively 'own' the word, and some Maori do consider this usage disrespectful, but that's probably a minority, so we'll keep doing it. I guess I'd feel like, if that's the situation, why not stop? Since for those Maori, the change would apparently make a significant positive, and for these folks it's just not that big a deal. Yeah, maintaining their search engine ranking onto a new domain name. I have no context on Maori culture or opinions so I'm not trying to judge anybody, but I didn't really follow the conclusion.

I didn't follow their conclusion either, since it seems like it could be the poster child of appropriation. I think it's good to have a unique word for searching about it, but I think it would be better to be a made up one. But I'm not really in the community, so I don't know, but since I've recently be nose deep in the white people doing other culture's things, I'm a bit sensitive. It may mean I can never join the community, since I think I will insist on being respectful.
