I'm sick and tired of my zen always being out of battery, so I'm looking for a new mp3 plsyer. My requirements are:

  • not an ipod
  • 30g or more
  • randomize over all songs
  • car chargable or a very long battery life
  • (optional) loadable from linux

Anyone have something I should look at?

EDIT: Whee! found http://www.anythingbutipod.com/
EDIT: ARG!! did someone break the internet? suddently my search fu seems to be gone, even when I'm searching for things that I know exist... perhaps it's time to find a new search engine.

Why not an iPod?

Personal gripe about them dominating the market hard enough that most people don't even KNOW there are other mp3 players and killing off my favorite mp3 player company, the rio. But often they're also horribly over priced by at least $100.

There's an unspoken requirement of affordable, which right now seems to be under $200.

I'd loan you mine, but I'm actually planning to use it next weekend and the weekend after.

My strategy is to go to Newegg and buy the highest rated item in my price range. If you need an MP3 player while you're waiting for the perfect product to go on the market, I suggest buying this:

I don't know if it's any good, but it's cheap and you can probably get Windows Media Player to shuffle your library onto it.

I picked up the new creative zen and I'm pretty happy with it. 16gb, will play video (after transcoding).

Only gripe is that its got a fixed battery.
I really liked the fact that my old zen had a removeable battery so that I could carry around a few charged spares. But I only used the player when driving/flying...
