I don't use my cell phone much, but I do use it. I like knowing I can use it if I need to. But I'm not sure if I use it enough to warrent the ~$300 a year in service fees I pay. I might try to switch to a pay-as-you-go, but I'm not sure that would work with my phone, plus I don't really understand the details.

Perhaps that's my answer, I should go understand the details.

See if you can get on someone's friends and family plan, and pay them a pittance for the minutes you use.

If you have a credit union, check with them too. Mine has great 50-200 minutes a month plans, and if I wasn't addicted to my internet on the bus iPhone I'd probably have one. They were super cheap too.

As I hardly ever use my cell phone, I have a pre-paid plan that works out to far less per month than any monthly plan I found. I throw $100 at it once a year for 1000 minutes, and so far have had plenty left over at the end of the year. The only even mildly tricky bit for me is remembering to acquire more minutes when the clock runs out (since the trival thing to check is how many minutes you have rather than when they expire). This is on T-mobile; I'm sure there are comparable plans with other carriers.
