In the future episode we'd seen that New York had exploded but that Claire was still alive, so "save the cheerleader, save the world" wasn't necearily the key (in fact, I THINK Hiro still doesn't know Claire is alive). It's also clear in the future episode that Sylar kills mystique, I mean Candice, since he can look like nathan. So insert a scene where peter meets Candice and sylar kills Candance.
Now Sylar can make people see other things, since Candice's power extends beyond herself, so sylar makes Peter look like him. Hiro stabs Peter, Peter heals, Hiro THINKS that sylar has Claire's power.
Peter still explodes, maybe because all his touchstones think he's sylar (why was he loosing control in the first place?) and the events that lead to the future are still in play.
Now I would, if I were actually writing this ending, put in one little hint that the future COULD be changed, that something was different from one of the paintings, but it's difficult to change things when you don't understand what's going on.
I had a bunch of other details to fit in to make the foundation for the 5-year future.
As the world stands, New york could still explode, except that the audience would feel a bit ripped off if they did. My personal theory is they had a bleak ending and a happy ending script and decided that the audience needed the happy ending and that they couldn't blow up New York, given reality.
