I've been thinking that too, recently. I decided that I hadn't learned a new instrument in forever, so I'm now thinking about buying an electric bass.
It's a tough choice between "hobbies with structure", like taking a class or joining a musical group, and "hobbies on my own". I feel scared of starting hobbies with structure, because I feel like I have too little time already, and there are millions of other things I should be doing, ike exercising. But without structure, I'm afraid I won't stick with it. Do you see things as divided that way?
I have lots of time right now. I want something with structure, but that's where the love comes in. I don't want to just take classes, pouring money into something that I can't see an outlet for.
The problem is I can't find groups that want to take me in. I never quite meassure up or the people who are willing, don't have the time.
I've found that the best for me is a hobby with structure but no responsibilities. For instance, I got really into Irish dance when I moved here, because it happens every week without fail, there's an organized lesson with different levels (giving me goals), and no one cares if I skip a week or a month or half a year.
I used to be overwhelmed by hobbies with responsibilities (fife & drum, student groups) and I realized I wouldn't be able to keep that up in grad school.
