i can't tell you what's girlie about it, but some large proportion of girls go through a horse-crazy phase somewhere between 6 and 12. regardless of whetehr they've ever seen a horse in person, know anything about them, whatever. i've seen lots of theories on why this is, but no hard evidence. theories include things about sexual awakening, freedom and independance, i really don't know whether any of them have any truth.

i never got it. but it's exceedingly common (and at least somewhat cross-cultural i believe).
