hair advice

I know nothing about taking care of my hair beyond shampoo, conditioner and brushing. I like to have it down, but mere minutes after I brush it, it will form strand clumps (like, not a ball, but my hair sectionalizes itsself, as if someone was dividing it up for 20 or so braids.) I can't blow dry my hair, because my hair becomes fragile. I also can't brush it when it's very wet (it gets super-springy, so it doesn't let go of the brush or comb properly and breaks and hurts.) Is there a method that I'm missing to train this behavior our of my hair so it will keep that just-been-brushed uniformity for longer than a few minutes?

My recommendation would be some kind of spray conditioner or hair serum used while brushing. My hair is somewhat similar to yours, in that I can't brush it while wet because of the springiness. And I also can't use a hairdryer. Best results are achieved when I let it dry fully or to only slightly damp and use a small amount of hair serum such as "got2b glossy" or "frizz-ease" or "hask". If you use too much it will be slimy and sticky but a small amount spread on with your fingers and combed in to distribute it works pretty well.

Have you thought about Henna, with the dry Colorado weather here, I use it to keep the frizzies down and give it a nice shine without the clumps.

Forming clumps might be too much conditioner, not too little. My hair only does that when it's oily or has too much styling stuff on it. Your hair is pretty fine I think so maybe the conditioner you use is too heavy for it.

I'm pretty sure it's always done it, even when I used no conditioner at all, but I'll experiment.

I used to use the conditioner first, then shampoo it out so it wouldn't weigh down my hair as much.

VO5 "Detangle & Shine daily weightless leave-in conditioner" is the product I find useful. It does require that you comb it in a bit after you apply it to wet hair, but I find that if I do a careful job of combing out my hair before getting in the shower, the product makes it slippery enough that I can comb it, at least minimally, when it's still damp.

Do bend over and spray it in with your head upsidedown, if you try a spray product. (It doesn't distribute well if I do otherwise.)

I also use this method of conditioning (apply to wet hair, then comb through, thoroughly). I find that it makes my hair slippery enough to easily work out knots in the shower, and then after I rinse it all out, it stays pretty nice and soft.
