Nicki is so polite now that he's old. I took him outside today without a leesh and with a few hand gestures got him to go back in the first time. The second time, in the back yard where he had more space, he mostly let me lead him, with out wandering off on his own. He took a little more pursuading to go back in, I think mostly because he was thinking "Wait, why should I climb these stairs to go back inside?" Once I put him at the top of the stairs, we went back in under his own free will with just a few hand gestures.
His deafness was also a plus, since when the dog barked scaring me, he didn't even flinch, let alone spook.
You're a pretty darn good kitty, Nicki, even with your drool and tendency to bite guests.
