One cause: when I've told movers exactly how many books I had, they clearly didn't really use that to derive any of their estimates.

I was lucky enough to have movers who respected that the books might be a major contributor to both the amount of lifting and loading and to the final value for the weight of the load so we didn't get a nasty surprise after they visited the scale. They reported that the customs agents were threatening to take the contents out of the van because there must be a car hidden in there.
