After my experience with my S40, I'd advise against using a non-standard phone with T-Mobile. In addition to the price issue is also the issue of whether they'll provide support for problems and whether they do regression testing against network changes. (My S40 worked great until they changed their network.)
The Nokia 6800 is a very spiffy looking phone and I would have been very tempted if it had been available with T-Mobile. Note that I actually find T9 predictive text entry to be not bad. My Nokia 6610 just showed up and is charging. I'm impatient and want to start playing with it.
