My theory why many people will never stop buying gas guzzling cars

They fill to $20 and don't realized that not everyone has to fill up as often as they do.

Oh, I was going to post about the $50 tankful of gas I bought the other day, but forgot to.

I broke the $50 mark the other day with a fillup. I ran the tank way way down trying to hold out for the prices to go back down... And the prices didn't go back down. Oops.

I don't try wait out rises. Rather, I pay attention to which direction prices are going. If they're heading down, I wait until my tank is near empty. If they're heading up, I fill up at the next convenient time when I'm passing a gas station, if my tank is below 1/2.

Every other place had peaked and settled back down like 3 days before this... If my place followed the curve of all the other places it was due to drop like 6-8c a gallon before I had to fill.

As it is, I didn't actually lose money from this wait.

my lord, what moster-sized gas tank do you have?
my "empty" light goes on after about 10 gallons...

[identity profile] crs.livejournal.com 2006-05-12 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
This was 16.5 gallons of premium at $3.119.

It is, in theory, a 17-gallon tank. The empty light had been on for some time, but you could still see the white of the "0" tick mark to the left of the needle on my gauge. (Funny thing about my car is that instead of E and F, the gas gauge goes from 0 to 1...)

[identity profile] crs.livejournal.com 2006-05-12 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and those 16.5 gallons lasted about two and a half weeks.

So how often DO people fill up? I get ~10 gal about every 3 weeks, unless I go on long road trips.

i get ~10gal every 10-14 days or so...

I was bumping around http://www.fueleconomy.gov for a car I saw on a commerical that took $100+ to fill up and went as half as far as my car.

My tank fills to 10-12 gallons, if I'm completely empty. I liekly filly up about once a month, unless I've been driving around alot.

I get ~11 gal about every 2 weeks, but most of that comes from boy shuttling.

I'm trying to remember where I heard that automakers install tanks large enough such that people need to refill every 2 weeks.

Which, if you have a 40-gallon tanks, means that you're carrying around a lot of fuel unnecessarily a lot of the time. (I think some SUVs have 40-gallon tanks.)

My vague recollection was that the federal gov didn't allow 20+ gallon tanks on non-commercial vehicles. Which is why Ford had pick-up trucks they sold with 2 19 gallon tanks and a switch to swap between the two of them (which is what the farm truck for pulling the horse trailer had).

I was putting about 12 gal in every 2ish weeks when I was working.
