too much innuendo

There's an old joke about a psychiatrist testing his patient with rorschach blots and diagnoses his patient as having a dirty mind, to which the patient replies, "you are the one with the dirty pictures."

I think we've gotten to that point, or at least the internet and television has. You can't say the word "balls" or "wiener" any more or even use the phrase "grab your" with a huge slew of words. Anything twice as long as it is wide is "phallic" and there's a video going around that because Mike Rowe said, "I've always wanted to go in the back door" on sesame street, it's now notable as "sneaking a dirty joke" in.

But really, if you're innocent, it will just fly right by you.

I don't know how we can get our language back.

This sort of thing has been going on for thousands of years.

I look forward to the day where our language might evolve into an analogue of the "Hey" or "What" alien races in The Tick cartoon.

And arguably, Shakespeare and Chaucer were the worst about it!

"I don't know how we can get our language back."

That's what *she* said!

The point isn't that there is innuendo but that folks with dirty minds will find innuendo where none was intended. Thus, as each new turn of phrase is dirtyized, as more and more silly things become child porn, as more and more simple nouns insult someone, less and less of the language is left untainted. Eventually, a television show will just be one long bleep, and we will have to guess what the weather tomorrow will be.

Even warning signs will need to be modified.

and our roads will have . . . well I was thinking "unintended cavities," but I think cavity is a rude word now too--at least it was in the list last night on Comedy Central. So no more p*t h***s for us to break a wheel in.
